My List of Megadeth Albums

Alright, so it's obvious to most that I'm a thrash lover, and I chose the Megadeth route over the more favored Metallica one. Why? Maybe it's because I'm different and like it that way. Or maybe it's because I prefer Dave Mustaine and his obvious talent he has over some faggot named... wait, what was his name? He's so bad I forgot... that guitarist from Metallica that has to use a machine to make his guitar sound good... No, Mustaine is pure talent. Plus, his raspy, but demanding vocals make the songs so much better. Megadeth has released a number of albums over the years, and I've decided to rank them from best to worst (you'll see my favorite at the bottom), but only the studio albums. No compilations of greatest hits, this is the raw originals. So without further delay, here is my ranked list of Megadeth albums, starting with the worst.

11. Risk

This album actually doesn't need much explanation for why I hate it. Simply put: IT ISN'T THRASH. Which is what Megadeth is. Megadeth without thrash is like (video game comparison) Mario without his Super Mushrooms. It's death waiting to happen. The name "Risk" is basically Dave Mustaine saying "this likely won't work, but we're gonna RISK it anyway." Luckily, they moved out of this shit immediately after it's failure, and went back to the thrash everyone loves. People may know this album for Insomniac and that NHL song Crush 'Em, but they're too mainstream for my liking.

10. Youthanasia

This album was the album released immediately before Risk, and while I like every Megadeth album besides Risk, a bottom has to be put somewhere. Youthanasia is the most fitting bottom. It was during Megadeth's move to mainstream rock, and because of that a lot of the songs sound like they're on the Risk album. Gross. There is one song that I really enjoy (It's also been remade, I'll get to that) called A Tout Le Monde, one of my favorite Megadeth songs ever. Besides that though, there aren't many songs that stay stuck in my mind for a while. I can't even name another one off the top of my head.

9. So Far... So Good... So What!

So What was Megadeth's transition album between the two best Thrash albums of all time, and maybe that's why this album wasn't that great. The album featured the classic hit "In My Darkest Hour" which is a popular song for anyone who wants to learn Megadeth on the guitar, and is a personal favorite. They also did a cover of "Anarchy in the UK", but everything about it is messed up. Sure the song sounds better as a metal cover, but they fucked up the lyrics. Bad. All the rest of the songs seem random to these, so the album seems slightly irrelevant.

8. The World Needs a Hero

This was Megadeth's comeback after a terrible era of mainstream rock. It came back heavy. It came back amazing, like Megadeth should be. However, there just wasn't enough of that classic thrash feel to make the album great, and therefore, nothing came of it. This album featured a sequel to "Hangar 18" called "Return to Hangar", which features some of the same lyrics and guitar riffs, and is one of the better songs in the modern Megadeth library. Besides that, this album was a ghost album, but I respect it for its heaviness.

7. The System Has Failed

Similar to "The World Needs a Hero", "The System Has Failed" was Megadeth's recovery transition from it's mainstream attempt. The album was featured after the band got back together in 2004, also the year that Dave Mustaine re-released all of the previous albums with bonus tracks to extend them and bring them back to their former popularity. Anyway, this album. The tunes have gotten heavier than the last, and this is good. This album takes heavy to the extreme. Shadow of Deth is likely the heaviest intro music has ever seen, and I love it. Even still, this album was only leading up to something bigger to come, and thus this album wasn't as memorable. The most memorable part of the album was the kick-ass cover art.

6. Killing is My Business... And Business is Good!

Killing was Megadeth's first studio album, released before they hit their prime. This was basically Dave's way of venting all anger he had upon being kicked from Metallica, who had just released Ride The Lightning (Which Dave helped song write). Dave even brought a song over from his former band (Mechanix), sped it up, and made it more kick-ass. The Metallica version can't compare. There are some tracks that you wouldn't know about unless someone told you about them, but they would get stuck in your head pretty easy. Chosen Ones and the title song, for example. Fantastic guitar riffs make this album, for the most part.

5. Cryptic Writings

Most casual Megadeth listeners can refer to "Cryptic Writings" as the album they know Megadeth as. This was Megadeth's first slight move to the mainstream rock, but only a couple of songs have been shitted on. This album still featured the guitar that made Megadeth to begin with, and it is desplayed in songs such as Almost Honest and Trust, which also features an incredibly impressive drum intro. Songs like She-Wolf and FFF are the heavier of the album, and they make the album that much better. Megadeth's best work of the "dark ages" of thrash.

4. United Abominations

Megadeth's most recent is also it's best attempt at bring back the old school thrash. It boasts some of the most memorable tracks since the mid '90s, and is a great album to introduce people into thrash. It has a nice blend of modern and classic Megadeth. A Tout Le Monde (Set Me Free) is a song from the "Youthanasia" album, the song was sped up and featured some random chick, but it's still a great song. Other songs, such as Gears of War, Sleepwalker, and Washington is Next feature the thrashy guitar riffs of the past, and for that they will remain memorable for a while in the minds of Megadeth hardcores.

3. Countdown to Extinction

This album was the follow-up of Rust in Peace, and was the last thrashy album before Megadeth began slipping into the mainstream. This album impresses me. It features some of the most unique songwriting I've ever heard in my life. Sweating Bullets is probably the most obscure of them all, a song about a mentally tortured man in an institution, mixed with the drum riffs and the guitar solo, makes a listener say "Let's see Metallica pull THAT off!" Other classics include Symphony of Destruction, High Speed Dirt, and Captive Honour. Actually, the only song I question on the entire album is Ashes in Your Mouth, which sounds like it doesn't fit into the theme of the album at all. But still, a head banger for the ages.

2. Rust in Peace

Considered by most as the best Megadeth album of all time, "Rust in Peace" featured not Megadeth's most outstanding guitar riffs, but also Mustaine's best vocal work and the craziest drum parts in it's library. Rust in Peace... Polaris features Megadeth's greatest drum song ever. Not only the kick-ass intro, but ther rest of the song is just godly on many levels. Aside from that, of course, are titles like Holy Wars with it's amazingly fast guitar, and Hangar 18 with it's lyrics of awesome. There isn't much bad you can say about this album, and if you're a fan of thrash, you have played this album to hell. However, it just isn't enough to take the top spot on my list.

1. Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?

The classic Megadeth album and one that stands up against Metallica's greatest hits (and obliterates them, any day of the week). This album is quite possibly the greatest album ever created. It is a masterpiece of insane guitar and drums with a well blended mix of angry vocals and lyrics. The title song tops the charts as my favorite song of all time, nothing else comes close. If this song comes on, I'm rocking out. Can you put a price on peace? Every song on the album has the thrashy, classic feel that Megadeth is, and I love every song. Even the cover song, I Ain't Superstitious, was made to the point that the original sounds like complete garbage. Wake Up Dead features mostly a full song of just a guitar solo, which utilizes Mustaine's full guitarist abilities. Good Mourning and Devil's Island are the two anti-christ songs, they're heavy and they'll kick your ass just listening to them. All of the songs also feature an extensive guitar intro that absolutely sucks you in, and from there, Metallica is nothing but a cloud of dust. If you haven't fully experienced this album, get your ass to youtube and do so, or you're missing out. And while you're at it, buy the songs on Rock Band 2!
